The Sokoké is a breed of cat that lives in the wild in East Africa. It is a species with a beautiful coat, very rare. Having become a domestic cat with time, the Sokoké is affectionate and faithful to its masters. However, it has kept a good part of its wild character, independent of man, agile and fast.

Description and characteristics of Sokoké

The Sokoké is originally a wild cat living in Kenya. It has the particularity of living in trees. Of average size, it has a very muscular long body, long legs and fairly large feet. Its hind legs are a little bigger than the front ones. Its head is triangular in shape with prominent cheeks and cheekbones. The Sokoké has large ears slightly rounded at the tip and carried straight and high on its head. It also has large almond-shaped eyes that can be gold, amber or green. Its tail is long and thin.

The soft and silky hair of the Sokoké is short but a little longer on its belly. Its coat is honey-colored at the base with black or chocolate brown striped patterns. Its coat is called "brown marble tabby". Its stripes are small on the head and form a kind of arabesque on its cheekbones. Others start from his shoulders to widen until his tail where these stripes are darker and darker until its tip.


Origin of Sokoké

The Sokoké is native to Kenya and more particularly to the Sokoke forest, from where it takes its name. This feral cat was originally discovered by chance in the 1970s by a breeder who did not know at first that it was a very rare breed of cat.

It was first shown for the first time at a dog show in 1984 in Denmark. The Sokoké has been recognized internationally since 1993.


Character and behavior of the Sokoké - Who is it for?

Although the Sokoké is originally a wild cat, it has become a domestic cat over time. But it has kept its very independent side from humans. It is nevertheless a sweet and affectionate cat even if it doesn't like to be hugged too much. He appreciates the presence of children as much as adults, as well as other cats, and he is happy as soon as he can share moments of play.

 With its agility, liveliness and speed, the Sokoké has all the characteristics of a feline and can even make you think of the leopard in its behavior. It also has a very particular intense meowing and purring. It is a cat that particularly appreciates water and is a good swimmer.


How to take care of your Sokoké: its needs

Sokoké needs large spaces to flourish. They must be able to climb trees to satisfy their hunting instincts and their need for intense activities.

Its maintenance is not complicated. A regular brushing is sufficient.


The feeding of the Sokoké

In the wild, the Sokoké feeds not on birds and rodents but on butterflies, flies and crickets. It decorates these insects with grass for better digestion.

At home, the Sokoké should be fed with good quality and, if possible, 100% natural kibbles, without additives or preservatives.
