Description
and characteristics of the Cymric
One of the
main characteristics of the Cymric is that it has no tail. However, there are
four varieties of this cat with different tail lengths: the rumpy (no tail at
all), the rumpy riser (the tail is a cartilaginous excrescence formed by one to
three sacral vertebrae), the stumpy (small tail of three to four cm maximum)
and the longy (half-long and sometimes twisted tail).
It can also
be recognized by its roundness and its thick and silky medium-long hair. It is
a cat with a robust body, muscular and heavy-boned. Even the head of the Cymric
is very round, surmounted by two ears not very large, well apart and rounded at
the tip. All the body of the Cymric is covered with a very fine semi-long hair
which can be of all colors. It has hind legs much longer than the front ones.
Origin
of the Cymric
The Cymric
originates from the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. It is a cross between two
cats of the Manx breed, one of the oldest cats known, holding the long hair
gene. This is why the Cymric resembles the Manx in every way, the only
difference being that its hair is long. It appeared in the eyes of the general
public in the 1970s.
Character
and behavior of the Cymric - Who is it for?
The Cymric
is sociable and affectionate. It is a cat that is very suitable for a family
with children, but it is also the ideal companion for an elderly person. He is
a true adorer and tender companion for his owners.
The Cymric
is a cat that cannot stand to be alone. His owner must therefore be very
available and he must not be absent too often. Or else the Cymric must have a
companion at his side, a cat like a dog.
How to
take care of your Cymric: his needs
Considering
the thickness of the hairs of the Cymric, it is advised to brush it every day
to avoid the formation of knots and to preserve the beauty of its dress.
Otherwise, it is a cat that can live as much in an apartment as in a house with
a garden.
Cymric's
diet
Like all
cats, Cymric's diet is based on meat. The recommended proportions for his meals
vary according to his age, state of health and physical activity. It is a cat
that tends to become overweight if its food is too abundant.
Cymric's
health
The Cymric
does not have a health that poses particular problems and some even live up to
20 years. However, like the Manx from which he is descended, he may have
"Manx syndrome". This is a genetic defect that deprives these cats of
their tail. Some do not experience serious consequences of this syndrome, while
others may suffer from developmental problems, skeletal deformities, and even
die at birth.
