Rex, also known as the Urals Rex, is a cat breed that is still not widespread
in the world, except in Russia, its country of origin, and Germany. It gains
however to be known as it shows so much kindness, softness and affection
towards its owner. It is also an elegant cat whose main characteristic is its
curly hair that forms waves on its body.

The main
characteristic of the Ural Rex is its wavy fur, composed of short or
medium-long, curly and silky hairs, just like the Devon Rex and the Cornish
Rex. This particularity is due to a natural genetic mutation called "Rex
mutation". All colors are allowed in the Ural Rex. Its dress can be plain
or bicolor.
The Ural
Rex is of medium size and its muscular body is harmonious. Its legs, which end
in oval shaped paws, are thin and well proportioned. This cat has large oval
eyes, quite spaced apart and a little slanted, whose color varies with that of
its coat. The cheekbones of his cheeks are slightly protruding and he wears his
medium sized ears straight on his head.
The Ural
Rex has a tail of medium length and fine which ends in a slightly rounded tip.
Origin
of the Ural Rex
Ural Rex is
native to Russia, and more precisely to the Urals region, hence its name. It is
a breed that appeared recently, at the end of the 1990s, and is not very
widespread. It was developed by Moscow breeders, then German breeders in the
2000s. The Ural Rex is not yet recognized as a breed in its own right by the
Official Book of Cat Origins (LOOF) but only since 2006 by the World Cat
Federation (WCF). It is a rare cat outside Russia and Germany.
